Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In my classroom I have 22 creative, enthusiastic learners who work hard everyday. They have a strong growth mindset and have such excitement towards learning and such genuine curiosity that it's contagious. My goal as their teacher is to help them love learning, be kind to one another, and work hard every day to become better thinkers and humans.
My students are incredibly diverse in many ways - from their backgrounds, to their needs, to their ability levels - but they are all truly wonderful, curious learners who have so much potential.
Our school is a Title I, fully inclusive school, with a majority of students learning English as their second language. Of my 22 students, 20 speak English as a second language, one is a newcomer to the United States, and 3 require integrated services. Having a class spread across such a wide spectrum presents many challenges, and it is my duty and privilege to help my students meet and surpass those challenges so they achieve anything they want to do in the future.
My Project
When students have the ability to choose what will work best for them, they are more motivated and focused. Flexible seating gives students that choice. Right now, my students are limited to sitting or standing at their desks, working at an alternate table, or sitting or laying down on the rug with a clipboard. Many students want to stand or work on the rug, and some simply need to be able to move around as they work, and allowing them to do so has resulted in increased focus and productivity in the classroom. However, the lack of flexible seating in my classroom has limited their options and comfort in their seat of choice.
Giving my students seating options that will make them more comfortable as they work will help them be more engaged and productive in their independent work.
Wobble stools and chair kickbands will enable students who need to move or fidget as they work to do both at the same time. The standing desk will benefit students who work best while standing, and as it is easily mobile, it can be positioned wherever the student feels most comfortable. Having lap desks and comfy floor seats will enable students work more comfortably on the rug or in the library, as they will be able to sit up as they read, write in their notebook, or work on their laptop. The back of chair storage will allow students to keep their belongings off their desks, which will clear up desk and classroom space and help with organization and focus.
My students work so hard everyday, and giving them comfortable seating options will help them to keep up the hard work!
