Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a large, wonderful high school. However, my students come from central New York where they do not get to practice speaking Spanish nor reading it. They work hard and practice their speaking doing skits and other real world dramas, but they need to develop their reading skills.
Most of my students have not traveled outside of New York, so culture is difficult to teach.
Many of my students are low-income and are unfamiliar with airports, high speed trains or other things one might see when traveling. But, even so, they continue to press on and try to expand their knowledge.
My Project
These magazines will give insight to my students because we do not have a textbook.
Scholastic books and magazines are like having a lens to the outside world.
We used these magazines before but the students had to bring in money for their issue. My students cannot afford to do that and so we have not had the magazine since 2005. These magazines will be our eyes to other cultures. These magazines will increase literacy in a way that is not possible right now. Not only are the pictures incredible, but the articles are amazing. Please help us have our magazines.
