Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Living Environment at a high school in the Bronx. It is a newcomer high school that has an all ELL student population. The racial composition of my school is 57.3% Hispanic or Latino, 17.9% White, 16% Asian, 7% Black, 1.9% Multi-Racial.
Although the student population is somewhat diverse, my students do have a variety of cultures, experiences, and values that they bring to the classroom which I do take into consideration when planning out my lessons.
Our school has 80% of the population that are in the United States for less than two years. 55% of the students speak Spanish as a native language while 45% of the students speak different languages including Bengali, Arabic, Albanian, French, Italian, Chinese, Urdu, Wolof, and Fulani. A heavy text in English is given in all spoken languages to students. Our school has several special student populations: one is over-age students with interrupted formal education (SIFE) whose specific needs include literacy in both their native languages and English. While gaining knowledge in content areas these students are really passionate about science topics especially genetics and reproduction. This topic teenagers feel to be more relevant about their life and are very enthusiastic to learn.
My Project
Our kids mostly have papers and pictures but nothing tactile.
We will use models to label specific parts and writing the function.
We would really appreciate it if we can have some models to help us learn about the reproductive system to be able to have it as models and references in class. My students are all English Language Learners and it is hard sometimes to have new scientific vocabulary every week. Having these models will help my students learn visually much more. I do play videos but they do not last forever being in class. Therefore I want my students to have the opportunity to see different parts of the human body and feel comfortable to know the functions.
