"Where does money come from? Don't you just go to an ATM machine and money magically appears? What can I do to have enough money to go to college?" These are the questions my students ask when we start discussing personal finance. It is obvious that we have a lot to learn about!
The majority of my ESL students are Spanish speakers that come from families with great financial needs.
About 65% of students at the school where I work are English Language Learners (ELLs), and about 98% of the students receive free and reduced-price lunch. My students are 81 enthusiastic and curious fifth graders who want to learn and be engaged and challenged on a daily basis!
My Project
Last week, my students started learning how to be smart about money. I have some resources to help my ELLs learn about how to be smart shoppers and how to wisely use their allowance. I would also like them to be able to learn about checking accounts, savings accounts and other personal finances. These are skills that will help my students succeed in the real world.
Unfortunately, I do not have any books that would help us understand personal finances better. I am requesting books to add to our classroom library and use with small reading groups in order to help us learn more about this very important topic.
I want to see my students go to college in the future.
In order to do that, they need to start saving money now! If we have these resources available in our classroom library every day, my students will be able to succeed in the future and have their dreams come true!
