Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach all subjects to 20 kindergarten students in a classroom at a Title I school in East San Jose, California. The majority of students at my school receive free lunch. Nearly all my students are English language learners and many of them are the first member of their family to attend school in the United States. Throughout the year, I try to build a classroom culture that is inclusive of my students\' various cultural backgrounds. I make sure to teach my students about different holidays, customs, and beliefs through literature, social studies, art and music. To help my students become culturally aware of diverse traditions, I am asking for multicultural books that will better teach my students about the variety of cultures which represent the student population at my school. The requested materials will not only help students build a sense of the very diverse people that they share their classroom with, but will also help my students learn a better sense of themselves. I have carefully picked out these children\'s books to reflect the diversity found at my school. These books not only speak to the wide diversity in my classroom, but deal with a number of issues including being bilingual, immigration, gaining new friends, and learning tolerance. In order to teach children to be proud of their own culture, as well as tolerant of others, it is imperative that they see their cultures represented in books. These books will engage my students in learning about other people and teach them to be proud of their cultures. The books will not only benefit my own class of 20 students, but also three additional kindergarten classrooms at my school. My students and I cannot thank you enough for your care and generosity!
