I am a middle-school teacher in Brooklyn at a school in which over 80 percent of the students qualify for free lunch. I teach seventh- and eighth-grade literacy to bright, motivated, creative, intelligent yet under-resourced students. The school is without a student newspaper, has very few opportunities for out-of-class creativity, and even fewer outlets for student voices. However, with the help and ideas of my students, I aim to change that. I proposed my student's idea to create a school-wide literary magazine--in which students will be able to publish their writing and voice their ideas--to my administration and was approved! My students are already off and running with the aptly titled, "Curious: The Middle School Agenda" literary magazine which provides a platform for teenage agendas and voices in the middle-school setting. This magazine will be produced, written, and publicized by students for a student audience. To help launch this project I am requesting from a generous donor a combination photocopier-printer with which to make essential copies necessary for the publication of this magazine. I am also requesting printer cartridges to ensure the longevity of the project. With your help "Curious" will be a reality.
