Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Imagine being 5 years old and having to spend the majority of your school day either sitting in a chair working or sitting on a carpet for a lesson. It's hard to do! Most of my kindergarteners have difficulty sitting for extended periods of time.
I teach in a magnet school and I have 24 enthusiastic, fun-loving kindergarteners.
My kindergarteners come from a wide range of family dynamics, some live in traditional households while others live in single parent households, and others live with extended family. My students' economic situations are just as varied as their family dynamics and sixty percent of my class qualifies for free lunch. Regardless of these factors, every one of my students possesses a passion for learning, exploring, and playing!
My Project
This is my second project requesting Hokki Stools. Hokki stools will allow my students to sit and be active at the same time. Hokki stools have a concave base that will allow my students to move in all directions. My students will benefit from this type of stool because movement while sitting boosts blood flow throughout the body and an increased oxygen supply to the brain. When students are physically engaged hormones are released that have a specific effect on brain activity. Research shows that this relationship between movement and brain activity leads to better academic results. I have students in my class that find it very difficult to sit on the classroom chairs. These students often stand while working or sit in a manner that has half of their bodies falling off of the chairs. I want these students to be able to sit and work safely. These stools will help my students to actively sit, concentrate and will ultimately enable them to be more productive learners.
