My Students
My students are a vibrant group of 6th graders with many diverse qualities. In our group of 27 students, we have students from about 15 different ethnic backgrounds that speak over 7 different languages (some of them are even bi- and tri-lingual!). Our students are in their last year of elementary school and are now preparing for middle school next year. To make our best attempts at preparing them for middle school, we departmentalize, so our students move between classes to learn reading, math, and science.
One of the trademarks of our classroom is that we pride ourselves in our continued path to professionalism and our college careers.
In reading class, we spend much of our time researching and discussing current issues, like politics, civil rights, and work equality. We have even embarked on a new journey of more adequately using technology to augment our learning, as we understand that technology is a staple in modern-day life!
My Project
In our attempts to use our laptops more often in reading class, we have come to find that noise is becoming an issue. Students' research may include watching videos about a topic. Also, while using our online reading tool, CommonLit.org, some students use the "Read to Me" function that is allowed on the site. On several online programs, our students are also asked to repeat and/or speak into their laptops to register an answer. Because their mics are not made for the amount of noise traffic we create, this is nearly impossible.
You can imagine how difficult it is to focus with as much noise traffic as we often create.
We believe that noise is a good thing in our classroom; it means we are getting things done. However, we have found that it is difficult to listen to a story about Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech being read to us while we hear a TED Talk about black holes in space in the background.
