My Students

My school district is the 10th largest school district in the state of Pennsylvania. Due to economic status, all students receive free breakfast and lunch. In the last four years, five elementary and two high schools have closed.

Many of our students come from homes that are below the poverty rate.

Our classrooms lack basic supplies that are critical to the learning environment. Our students struggle with basic reading strategies and are below grade level. The provided reading materials are outdated, above their level, and black and white copies stapled together.

My Project

Our school district has recently closed several of our schools and omitted any additional funds for things such as recreation. Our students play on a cement slab, running back and forth. Typically there are 80-100 kids trying to "run off some steam" in this small space.

We greatly need some playground equipment we could use throughout the year.

This equipment will be used by the entire school, including our pre-kindergarten, life-skills, and special kindergarten. Not only would it be used this year, but many years to come. Research has shown if children have the opportunity to play, they can concentrate better. This equipment would also assist in team building.
