Students are scholars at our school. We set high expectations and standards for them, and they always strive to do their best. We are located in a county that has been hit hard by job loss and companies closing down. We are a diverse school, serving scholars of various socioeconomic and ethnic diversity as well as levels of academic achievement backgrounds. Despite their differences and hardships, our scholars are determined and motivated to do their best. To help them do this, I want to give them access to as many resources as I can.
Scholars need access to supplies to stimulate their creativity and foster an authentic love of learning and exploring.
Our school is a Title I school, in which over 80% of the scholars receive free or reduced lunch. The cost of supplies can add up quickly, making it difficult for scholars and their families to obtain the supplies needed to participate in the activities planned for them.
Our teachers and faculty are dedicated to helping our students feel loved and safe. We want them to feel that it is okay to take risks and think outside the box.
My Project
The scholars of our school are active, eager, and highly intelligent. They are active and mobile and love challenges. Our school has a few Lego Education sets that we use for STEM activities and our STEM Lab. Scholars are extremely engaged when we bring out the Lego sets. We want to expand on all of this and introduce scholars to the First Lego League. This is a huge undertaking, especially for our students who are in a community that cannot afford to contribute to the costs of supplies.
Scholars will be building robots and solutions to 21st century problems using the Lego EV3 sets, and will be coding their creations to move and perform basic functions.
To do this, we need some Lego sets and parts. The EV3 Mindstorms set and expansion are needed for the First Lego League competitions. We will need the Large Servo Motor and Touch Sensor to build more complex robots.
The goals for our Lego and Coding club will be to foster creativity, a love of problem solving (through Lego Design challenges and coding skills and tasks) and promote and encourage teamwork. These items will help us get there and achieve so much more!
