Help me give my students STEM materials we will be able to expand our knowledge and hands on success of growing and producing fresh produce and flowers to help ourselves and others thrive.
My classroom is made up of 15 8th grade students in a special education self contained classroom. One of the biggest challenges that myself and my students face is a lack of support for education at home. This project is very important to my students to make up for that. They will be exposed to agriculture through the completion and exposure to self sustaining agriculture that will allow them to grow as more independent students. Most of my students are struggling with access of healthy food options at home. It is important for them to constantly have the opportunity to make good food choices to nourish their bodies as they grow. We hope to spread our increasing awareness and love of healthy food options and actually growing fresh produce while learning to grow it ourselves Our school is made up of very economically diverse families which provides a unique set of characteristics.
My Project
My students struggle with economic disadvantages and lack of support from home. We will use our new composter and starter materials to make amazing soil to plant our new seeds!! We will use our new planters and lights to grow our own produce to share with other students and our families!! The very few plants of fruits and vegetables that I have brought in from my home has peaked the interest of my students. My hopes of creating a fun and fulfilling attitude of agriculture in my classroom are to help my students and the students in my school also want to become active with agriculture themselves and carry it to their homes. Many if not most of my students have no other option of what to eat at home other than fast food or processed frozen food. The health and growth of these students rely heavily on their nutrition. This is a huge area of needed improvement. If my students know how to grow fruits and vegetables themselves then they will create that opportunity for themselves.
