My students are curious and full of questions! They range from ages 12-15 and come from all different walks of life. They love hands-on, experimental learning and are eager to see the outcomes and creation of their own work. As a science teacher, I encourage their unique exploration and remind them that failure is not a bad thing, but a learning tool all scientists experience. Great discoveries have come from experimentation, mistakes and trying things over and over again.
My students are part of a small town nestled on the outskirts of Raleigh, N.C.
Many of these kids have never left their community due to financial or socioeconomic restraints inside their families. Sometimes, my classroom is the only place these students get a chance to "explore" what's available to them outside their small town. Their restraints don't hold them back though, they are still very compassionate and thoughtful students with the drive to take in every thing around them.
Do you remember the first time you created something with your own hands from start to finish? Do you remember the value of that creation, whether it was big or small, and how it made you feel? These students deserve that!
My Project
My students need indoor lighting, seeds, and planting materials for their seedlings to grow. The different variations of bulbs will allow us to experiment with various light colors and wave lengths to see which light provides the best growth.
Research has shown that having plants in your classroom increases the air quality in your space, fuels creativity and exploration and increases one's self esteem after watching their own creation flourish!
With the addition of these plants in our classroom, my students will be able to watch and nurture a living organism from seedling to full bloom. The learning possibilities are endless - light and wave length, soil and water monitoring, measurement and documentation, scientific inquiry, scientific experiments, ecosystems, earth science, botany, fundraising possibilities, etc. Students will be able to document their journeys with interactive notebooking and share their outcomes with the community if they decide to use the vegetables they grew for fundraising!
First and foremost, this project will allow students to create something unique to them with their OWN hands from start to finish and teach them a life sustaining skill that they can continue to use forever.
