My Students

My students come to school each day excited to learn. They are a culturally diverse group of students that come from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds, but are united in their enthusiasm and joy for learning. My kindergarten class consists of high energy 5 and 6 year olds that learn best through exploration and experimentation.

The students start off each day with a spark that I wish to foster through highly engaging, interactive experiences.

They love anything and everything hands-on and I try to encourage this through STEM activities that allow them to inquire, explore and create. In this way I hope to aid them on the path to being a life-long learner.

My Project

Each year in kindergarten, we study the plant life cycle and where food comes from. We grow little plants in cups. We love them, care for them, and watch them grow. The students take the plants home and hope for the best, but in our busy, urban lives, the plants often die before they have a chance to produce.

I am asking for materials that will allow students to not only grow food year round, but to interact with it daily and understand scientific concepts related to how ecosystems function.

The project includes a compost bin, raised garden beds and garden tools. The compost bin is a hands-on activity that demonstrates how things biodegrade. The planter boxes and gardening tools will allow the students to use the freshly composted dirt to grow food. Students will have the opportunity to learn about, develop and problem solve in a self sustaining garden. Your generous donation to our class will help foster an understanding and connection to the food we eat.
