My Students

Do you remember trying to decide which college to attend? For many of my middle school students, the question is not which college to attend but whether they will go to college at all. This needs to change today!

My 6th and 7th grade ELA students attend a charter school in Milwaukee that aims to close the achievement gap by starting middle schoolers on a path to college preparedness.

Here, they learn the importance of both academics and character development. Our school is filled with students who have the potential to be great scholars. We have the talent. We have the drive. Now we just need some of the materials.

My Project

One of our big goals this year is not only to put our middle school students on the path to college preparedness but to invest them in the extreme importance of this academic journey. In order to do so, I am asking for a wide variety of materials: exciting YA books and graphic novels that teach ACT and SAT vocabulary words; copies of guides to colleges, college majors, and the college admission process; collections of stories from real teens and young adults who have applied to and attended good colleges and universities; and workbooks that teach study and note-taking skills. In addition, I am also asking for a classroom set of We Beat the Street. Reading this inspiring book as a class will show my students that getting into a good high school and going to college is a possibility for everyone -- and a crucial key to future success.

This college-prep project will prove invaluable for my students, because it ultimately will help them both seek and gain admission to high-performing colleges and universities.

They will get to decide their own courses of study, their own career paths, and their own futures. Your donation will make a huge difference.
