I teach in a Title I school where 60% of our students receive free or reduced-priced meals. My school is on the coast of Central North Carolina. Our town was ravaged by Hurricane Florence in early September, 2018. We were recently affected by Hurricane Dorian in September, 2019.
Due to the destruction of Hurricane Florence and Hurricane Dorian, many of my students are still living in hotel rooms or temporary housing.
Their homes were severely damaged and are now no longer habitable. Several of my students are living with extended family members while their homes undergo roof repairs and renovations. Some of our families have friends and family living with them during our Florence recovery.
Our small town has been hit hard. The hardship caused by Hurricanes Florence and Dorian has caused a lack of focus and created undue stress that makes it nearly impossible to harness my children's reading and math abilities.
My Project
VersaTiles will be used in our classroom to target different skill sets and to reach students having different learning styles. VersaTiles offer students critical reading and math practice in an engaging, puzzle format and allows students immediate feedback. VersaTiles will be used to differentiate instruction for students in an inclusion classroom with focus on phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension along with various math skills. VersaTiles will be used first in small Guided Reading groups and then in collaborative team stations.
The hands-on approach VersaTiles provides will allow my students to stay engaged and have fun during math and reading time.
I feel this project would increase engagement and meaningful interaction in small groups with students at different levels of ability while also encouraging students to become confident risk takers as a team player.
