This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are absolutely thrilled to come to school to learn each day. They are at the special age where they are transitioning from learning to read, to reading in order to learn. I am honored to be joining them on this educational adventure.
My students come from a wide range of backgrounds but bring an enthusiasm to the classroom that cannot be matched!
By having a growth mindset, I want my students to believe they can do anything...including making at least 6+ levels of reading growth in one year. As the reading interventionist, I have the privilege of working 1 on 1 with eight students to help close the achievement gap. Through targeted Reading Recovery instruction for thirty minutes per day, I get to assist the most struggling readers make massive gains and build their confidence!
My school qualifies as Title I; students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many live with family members other than their biological parents. It is my goal to make the classroom a fun, stable, and safe place to learn. With the right tools and attitudes, I know my students will be successful this year.
My Project
The DC Public Schools' goal is for students to reach Reading Level I by the end of the year. It is my goal, for my students, to reach Level J.
I have chosen the book sets at higher reading levels to give my students exposure to more complex texts.
My classroom library has many titles at the lower levels to build foundational reading skills. However, they need access to more difficult texts on levels H, I, and J to practice the skills needed to reach that goal. These engaging texts with familiar characters will support them.
The sketchbooks will act as their notebooks. Every lesson includes a writing component. Students need blank notebooks so they can focus on the spelling of new words.
