My students need informational text to improve literacy and comprehension of nonfiction selections including Scholastic News, books about conservation and planets.
A typical day in my classroom is full of learning. We hit the ground running first thing in the morning. My student's give great effort but many struggle with reading skills. At the end of the year, I want each of my students to have personal growth in all academic areas.
I have twenty-one, unique and diverse students.
This includes 7 boys and 14 girls. Each one brings something different to the classroom. We hug and high five everyday at least twice, maybe even more! They are funny and don't take me or themselves too seriously. We like to have fun and learn. My students love reading and math stations which we do each day. Our school is located in a tight knit community where people truly care about each other.
My Project
My students will use the materials in novel ways. The books will be available for checkout and reading during certain stations. We will use the Scholastic News to really understand things in our world. Many of my students (given their background and lack of experiences) don't know much about their local news, much less the greater world we live in. The scholastic news will give my students a chance to see how other people live and the things that happen in our world every day. I will use this text to teach my students skills that the CCSS demand. This includes CLOSE reading to give my students a chance to dig much deeper into text.
This project will help my students only positively.
They will be given a world view of things that are happening around them. They will be able to experience a different type of text, but one that will be interesting to them.
