I am a first grade teacher at an elementary school in a small rural community. I serve 20 wonderful and energetic first graders. They love to listen to books, play math games, work together in their literacy centers, and stretch out on the floor while they read their own books.
Our elementary school was flooded by Hurricane Harvey.
We have been displaced and are now in our fourth classroom this school year. About three weeks after Hurricane Harvey flooded our school, we started school at a local church who graciously welcomed us to use their facilities. After about two months at the church, our elementary school was transferred to another campus in our district. After four months at this campus, we were moved into our current classroom on our own campus, but in portable buildings. Several of my students had water damage to their own homes and have been displaced, as well.
We are making the best of it and try to have fun learning each and every day.
My Project
Hurricane Harvey brought flood waters that devastated our school. The flood waters ruined our classroom furniture. Among the furniture lost were storage bins that stored our backpacks and lunch kits during the school day.
Safety and organization are important in a classroom.
I would like to get locker storage units to store my students' backpacks and lunch kits. Right now, my students have no place to put their backpacks. They hang them on the backs of their chairs. But, the backpacks don't stay on the chairs for long. They fall off the chairs several times throughout day. My students and I have almost tripped over them as we move about the classroom. Even the backpacks that manage to stay on the chairs still get stepped on, because the chairs are low to the ground.
A set of lockers would get the backpacks out of the way and make our classroom more organized and safe.
