Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you know how much paper we go through in a year? We go through a LOT of paper! We are on a 195 instructional day calendar and have high expectations for all of our students. While we do recycle our paper , my Kindergartners often struggle writing with pencils due to lack of fine motor skills.
We are a charter school in California so I have a lot of freedom and flexibility in reaching out to my students.
All of my students are English Language Learners and LOVE coming to school. Six of my students are left handed and two qualify for occupational therapy. I have 5 students that turn five after September so their fine motor skills need to be developed. With the expectations of wanting Kindergarteners to draw and write stories with a beginning , middle , and ending ,my students need ample opportunities to practice drawing lines and curves before writing letters. They are in school for the whole day ( from 8am to 3pm)and I am looking for ways to develop their writing stamina.
My Project
I am requesting a class set of dry erase markers and lined white boards to help my students develop their writing skills throughout the year. In addition , I am requesting a class set of wide pencils that my school does not supply me. My students currently use dry erase markers to write the morning message, write lists at the dramatic play center , whole group blending activities, and phonics activities at the listening center. We roughly go through 5 markers every week. Since we are in school for 10 months , I am spending quite a bit of money every month to replenish our dry marker supply.
If all my students have a dry erase marker ,I am able to do whole group instruction instead of just small group instruction with dry erase markers. Markers ease the frustration to young writers who are not confident and not ready for pencils. in addition , I am requesting a supply of pencils for my students to use when it comes time to write stories.
My Kindergarten students need to build their stamina when it comes to writing.
Dry erase markers and white boards would help reduce using paper and help ease the frustration of using pencils. By helping me fulfill this proposal , you will be allowing my students to take more risks when it comes to writing.
