Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am an advisor and teacher for an amazing bunch of students. My students strive for success and are very hardworking. They care about each other and are willing to go out of their way to improve one another's day.
We are looking at instilling a passion for the outdoors that these students will have for a lifetime and pass on to their children and the next generation.
Many of these students have never held a fishing pole or even been to a lake or river.
I have a variety of students that range from 9th-12th grade. Some are the only child and some have many siblings. The majority of my students are Title I and living at or below poverty level. There are many that are first-generation immigrants and many are going to be some of the first in their families to graduate high school. My students have a variety of backgrounds that leads to students having a firm understanding of what life is about.
My Project
We are starting a new fishing club on campus. Many of our students live at or below the poverty level and don't have the money to purchase equipment necessary for them to participate in a club like this. I don't want that to hold them back and I definitely don't want to turn away students because we don't have the equipment.
We will also be hosting watershed cleanups and teaching the students to be good stewards of the land.
These are some basic supplies to get started.
We need a minimum supply of lures and bait. This is a good base supply to encourage students to join and help our club get off its feet.
Many of our students have never been fishing or even to a place where they can fish. This is something new for many of them and we are looking to spark their interest. I have many friends that are just discovering the joy of fishing halfway through their life, and I don't want this to happen to my students. This is the perfect way to get students outdoors and caring about something enough to become stewards to the environment and have a skill to hand down to their next generation.
