Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our students live in a very high poverty area and most of their experiences will come from the books that we can provide them in our classroom.
I am a first grade teacher in my second year teaching.
I am looking for an opportunity to bring chapter books to my students in our classroom. I have a very diverse class and I teach in a very low socioeconomic area. The majority of our school participates in the free or reduced breakfast, snack, and lunch program. My students don't have access to books in their homes and we only have library once every a week. Our school has many children reading below grade level. The chapter books that are geared more towards our students are checked out on a regular basis by older children who are reading below grade level. We want to try and provide our students with as much literature as possible to ensure they are reading on grade level when they leave our room. We work as a community so that our school will be a positive learning environment for our students.
My Project
As a first grade teacher I am always looking for new ways to engage my students and spark their love of learning. I also want to teach my students to strive to achieve more than they realize they can. People tend to discount what the students at our school can do and achieve. I know that my students are capable of much more than they are given. I like to send my students to the next grade level with a love of learning and especially a love of reading.
Reading chapter books, such as the requested Junie B.
Jones and Magic Tree House books, in first grade is a giant leap beyond the expectations of the students and parents at our school. I want to teach my students to see that ceiling that people place above them, and then to decide that they can break right through it! Your only limitation is the one you allow people to place on you. "In order to succeed we must first believe we can" Nikos Kazantzakis.
