My classroom is full of wonderful, curious, and enthusiastic children who thrive off of movement and activity. They love to learn how to read and write, but it is often a challenge for them to sit still and focus while on regular chairs for long periods of time. Movement is key to their learning!
One thing they have in common is that they love movement!
We sing, we dance, we jump, we play. Movement is integrated throughout literacy, math, and science. Research has shown how movement and play are key to a child's development and I am fortunate to teach in a building that values that research and encourages teachers to integrate movement into all aspects of the day. The one part of our day that challenges our desire to integrate movement is literacy centers. During this time, my students work so hard to become better readers and writers. I believe that they would benefit from having a set of Hokki stools in our classroom, as this would extend movement into a time that ordinarily does not have much.
My Project
Every day, my students participate for one hour worth of literacy centers. Each student reads books with me, practices writing through various activities, completes word work activities, and reads books from our classroom library. Sixty minutes is a long time for children who are 5 and 6 years old to sit and concentrate during literacy centers. While the children do stand up to move to new centers, this movement is simply not enough. By integrating Hokki stools into my literacy center routines, children will have the opportunity to "sit still" while they move their bodies on their Hokki stools. I plan to use these stools at my guided reading center, where students are expected to use a variety of skills to help them become readers!
This project will change the lives of the students in my classroom because it gives them an opportunity to move and learn in a way that they ordinarily would not be able to.
The Hokki stools during literacy centers will allow my students to fidget and move, while still being able to focus on the task they are completing. I want all of my students to find success in school, and having these stools in my classroom is another opportunity to help them reach their goals!
