Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Becoming Montessori certified and then teaching in a public school, I learned immediately the great impact that Montessori materials have on primary learning experiences. I didn't know what it was; not many people that I talked to did, but I wanted to try it and now I love it. The Montessori philosophy calls for the child to be the teacher. I'm resigned to being merely the guide. The children show me what they want to learn - of course I give them direction, but they are the teachers! This is what I want for my classroom now.
I have moved from that school to another public school that has NO programs like this. I want to be the pioneer. I want my students to touch the letters of the alphabet, feel 100 beads and know the quantity and understand the continents and how they fit into our world and where we are on the globe. I want them to touch it and build these things themselves. I want them to construct sentences on the floor with letters and objects rather than sitting at a desk reading a textbook and answering questions on paper. I want my kids to grow a garden and learn botany even though they are only six years old. Why can't they multiply with beads and wooden stamps in the first grade?
I want to offer them another way of learning that will stay with them for the next forty years. I would like to have some basic Montessori materials purchased for my classroom so that my students can benefit from the incredible hands-on experiences they possess. I have seen children with these types of resources reading, writing and computing math operations well above grade level. I want to give my 22 first grade students the same opportunities. Since the majority of my class is on free or reduced lunch, very few of them have learning experiences outside our classroom door. Please help me show them how to use their hands to learn!
