Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Half of my ELLs are students with special needs who are struggling readers expected to pass the state exams and be college ready. Some of them have interrupted formal education; most come from impoverished areas. The school is providing them with different instructional services, and the most recent one is the purchase of a reading program that requires technology. One thing is for sure: they are tech savvy and excited about this new program.
The students have been through a lot; two years ago, our school almost closed, and next year, the Panel for Educational Policy has voted to co-locate another school in our building, which will result in sharing of our resources.
Besides learning English, non-Spanish learners of English also learn a third language with a goal of becoming global citizens. I am extremely proud of my students for overcoming the obstacles, trying so hard to achieve their dreams, and staying true to who they are as individuals with different cultural backgrounds.
My Project
My goal as a teacher is to prepare my students for the life beyond high school. I want them to be college ready in terms of organizational skills, which are very essential not only as a student but as a professional. My students are recent arrivals who are challenged not only academically and linguistically but financially as well. Therefore, by providing them with necessary supplies, not only will you help my students but also their families too. To learn organizational skills, or any skill, we need tools. By providing us with them, you are investing in our future and dreams.
My students come from different educational systems where binders and such are not used.
By introducing them to binders, dividers, and necessary writing supplies, they will learn to organize their notes by subject area. As for the requested highlighters, they will be utilized when reading a text and annotating essential information. My students have low self confidence, and when they write with a pen, they make many mistakes, and the end product looks very chopped up and messy, which often affects its readability. These erasable pens will be used for final written assessments and if necessary for the state exams since students are not allowed to use pencils. Baskets will be used for bilingual dictionaries at their work stations, whereas staplers will be for every day use. Finally, incentive charts will be used to record students accomplishments and give them a sense of pride as they acquire this necessary skill- organization.
By having these supplies, my students will learn to organize their work and eventually create portfolios to showcase their academic achievements.
