Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Where does the food come from on the store shelf? This is a question our students will ask once we begin learning about the background of the food on our dinner tables!
A majority of the students in our fifth grade classroom live in apartments.
The food they eat comes straight from the grocery store. They have no idea where their food comes from, or what nutrition they get from which foods. Most of their time is spent "gaming" or watching television. It is time for us to garden together and determine where our food comes from!
My Project
With the help of FEED USA and other donors that help us with this project, we will be bringing the garden into the classroom. Our fifth grade classroom has a large set of windows that get great morning sun. This will help us on our "hands-on" gardening project. By having the Earthkit, and other science items listed on this project, we will begin learning how our food is grown. It is important that our students understand the background of food -- where it comes from and the origins of the food they eat.
The books we are requesting for this project will allow the students to explore the history of their food. Then they will also have the opportunity to get their hands dirty in the gardening process. We will be planting items and watching them grow. This will allow us to bring in mathematics to track the growth, watering, and patterns of the plants we grow. The students will be using math, science, language arts, and social studies during this project based learning experience.
Help us garden together!
FEED USA and other donors can help us bring this project based learning experience into the classroom. Our children need to learn where their food comes from and the importance of it. Imagine learning that food came from the Ancient Civilizations and here it is on our table.
This project will provide an opportunity for every student in our classroom to learn about the food on their table, the nutrients in each food, and how it is grown. This hands-on project is just the beginning!
