My students need activities like the Knock Down! Number Challenge, Giant Egg and Spoon Race, and Watch it Rain! Discovery Cloud so that their sensory needs can be met through gross and fine motor opportunities.
My amazing preschoolers come from a variety of backgrounds. Located in a diverse town, our classroom is made up of several cultures and needs. Thirty-eight percent of my class has special needs ranging from autism to developmental delays.
We practice mindfulness on a daily basis to increase our empathy and kindness.
We also care for our class pets, Gus Gus and Jaq (pet mice) to learn about responsibility! We love to have visits from animals and anyone who can help us learn and grow!
We have math and literacy nights for families to help bridge learning to home and also have had a morning of mindfulness complete with yoga and even a therapy dog! Family involvement is crucial to our classroom's success!
My Project
Gross motor is so important to implement into a preschool classroom. My class is made up of a wide range of needs, so having gross motor options for them will provide energy outlets as well as engagement in play. activities that fulfill sensory needs through gross and fine motor opportunities. The knock down number challenge will incorporate sensory and gross motor and the giant egg spoon race will support interactive play. Activities like the Soft and Safe Ring Toss, Swing and Catch Cups, Water Whisks, Feel and Match Sensory Fish, and Design and Build Water Blocks will provide engaging opportunities while meeting sensory needs of all students.
This project will help support indicators like regulations of emotions and behaviors, large muscle movement, and coordination, visual motor integration, and small muscle movement and coordination.
When these needs are being met, students are more likely to be regulated during the school day and are set up for success! Many demands are put on students during a school day whether it be attending to a task or problem solving with a peer. This project will help students regulate their emotions and be able to meet the demands of a full preschool day. With your help, we can make a sensory friendly room for an amazing group of young children!
