Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach children with mild to moderate learning disabilities in a high-poverty school where all of our students receive free breakfast, healthy snacks, and lunch. Through no actions of their own, these kids have been dealt a hand that will make their school career more challenging than for some children, in more ways than one.
The challenges that some of our students may face are a lack of resources, such as transportation, or other economic hardships that may result in their family becoming homeless.
Families in this situation may have to live with relatives or friends. Our students who find themselves in this situation are guaranteed attendance at our school, even being provided with bus fare so that they can make it to school daily, no matter where they are staying.
Our school is filled with hardworking, dedicated teachers and staff who meet the challenges of working with an at-risk population on a daily basis. We work very hard at creating a sense of community for our children, their parents, and of course the staff of our school. Thank you for your support in this endeavor!
My Project
I have found that my students are motivated to learn by technology that incorporates both audio and visual presentation, and they are especially responsive when they can interact with that technology.
Osmo is a tool that allows all students, regardless of language and ability, to practice skills such as self-efficacy, problem-solving, and perseverance.
My students will use the iPads and Osmo kits to strengthen these skills while learning how technology translates from screens into action. The Osmo Coding Awbie game will encourage my students to use logic and critical thinking skills to solve problems while having fun! The Osmo Numbers game will help students who are working on basic math skills to learn them in a fun way.
In addition, the iPads will also be used to access applications for reading and math such as iReady, Khan Academy, and Prodigy Math. Students can also access their work through their student portal.
Having the Apple Pencils available to use with the iPads would allow students to use the most up-to-date software available to them to assist them with writing, editing, and even working through math problems. Knowing that this small piece of technology might excite a student whose least favorite subject is writing would make this project every bit worth being funded.
Lastly, I am requesting headphone splitters so students can work collaboratively, cases for the requested iPads and one other iPad recently funded, and cases for both pencils.
