My Students

I teach a multi-categorical preschool special education classroom at a title 1 school. All students at our school are deemed to be "at risk" due to a number of factors. My students ages range from 3-5 years old. Because my classroom is multi-categorical, I am teaching students with a wide range of needs. We have students in our classrooms with developmental delays (social emotional, cognitive, adaptive development, etc.), students on the Autism Spectrum, and students with visual impairments.

Gross motor opportunities and sensory integration is incredibly beneficial when working with children with special needs.

Having a designated area where students' sensory needs will be met, will help them academically, physically, and behaviorally. This project will benefit 8 classrooms, to include two special education classrooms, with all students having one or more risk factors. Though this project is intended for the two special education classrooms at our school, our sensory room will be available to every student, as every child benefits from sensory play and exploration.

My Project

Research shows that when students have their sensory needs met they are much better learners in the classroom. Having access to a sensory room will help all students be able to focus more, learn easier, and retain more information. The items that we are requesting for this room support a variety of sensory-motor needs. When these needs are met, students improve development in all areas, to include: cognition, communication, social emotional development, and motor development.

Our school is a unique early education public school center that serves students with special needs as well as at risk students.

Our goal is for all classes to have access to the sensory motor room daily, as all students will benefit from these materials.
