I teach in a very high poverty school where resources are scarce. We are a 100% free lunch school. The students who would benefit from this proposal have all been retained at least two times and are far below grade level. They are currently in a fourth grade classroom and hope to make enough progress to advance to sixth grade by the end of the school year.
Our students struggle academically in most subject areas, particularly with skills that are abstract and unfamiliar. Paper and pencil tasks do not resonate with them in substantial ways. Coming up with new and interesting ways to challenge our students and engage them in the educational process has become increasingly difficult. Our building lacks the resources to accommodate the growing desire to have access to more technology. Using appropriate technology in the classroom can engage students in a powerful way.
My students get very excited about their education, particularly when they can experience it. Putting materials in their hands that will enhance their understanding as well as spur their interest will only benefit them. The technology available with a Flip camera will expand the learning experience in a multitude of ways. They will have access to real-time technology that can be used for all subject areas. We plan on using the camera for reading fluency activities, math fact relays, science experiments and social studies reenactments, to name a few. The possibilities are endless for our classroom.
Many people have given up on our students. We are giving them a second chance to be successful, thriving students. By donating, you will be making it possible for our students to achieve their highest potential. You will be helping to ensure our students are knowledgeable about their education in a new and significant way!
