Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a STEM magnet middle school in Indiana. This means that my students chose to come to our school to learn more about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
My 7th and 8th graders come from all around the city to form a community where we focus on our core values of rigor, community, relationships, and drive.
My students come from diverse cultures and experiences, and some overcome significant obstacles to succeed at our school. In their two short years with us, they come in as young pre-teens and develop into teenagers prepared to flourish in high school!
My Project
Each year when we come back from Spring Break, I try to explain to my students how important this last quarter is. I pull up highlights from a big Final Four basketball game but stop the clip at the fourth quarter. They all yell and get mad because they say that's the important part! They need to see how it all ends!
This is exactly what I want them to learn from this activity: we aren't done yet; we have important work to do!
In order to finish strong, we have to restock some of our most used supplies. We are asking for markers, tape, white board cleaner, and folder cubbies. We use the markers and tape to make posters to show what we are learning. We use the white board cleaner to wipe off our individual boards after using them for board race competitions. The folder cubbies help us keep our work organized.
