Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students spend a portion of each day working on their spelling and writing skills with an interactive computer program, but trying to find their way around a keyboard is extremely difficult for some of them, and it slows down their progress. They need to learn how to use a keyboard!
I am a reading intervention teacher, and all my students are below grade level in reading.
We are a Title I school that serves one of the areas hardest hit in the current recession. Many of my students are English language learners, but they have dreams of college and achievement. At our school, we encourage our students to dream big and to pursue those dreams. I think my students are amongst the most amazing students at our school: they have the furthest to travel to catch up, and they rise to the challenge with an amazing tenacity. They are determined to stop the downward spiral and reverse it...I think I am the most fortunate of teachers because I get to witness this turnaround firsthand!
My Project
This typing software will give my students the skills to use a computer keyboard with two hands (instead of the "one-fingered-hunt-and-peck" approach), they will more swiftly and accurately be able to complete the spelling and writing challenges of the interactive software they use as part of our reading intervention program. Furthermore, many of my students struggle to write things out by hand. With proper keyboarding skills, they will be able to quickly transfer their thoughts to print via word processing programs...the ability to see their words in print is highly motivating to my emerging writers because it allows them to focus on their content rather than the formation of their letters (this would be especially true when they are doing peer editing!).
The skills my students would gain from this program would extend far beyond the walls of the classroom.
Not only will it serve these students well as they continue on in their educational careers (typing assignments, reports, etc.), the ability to efficiently utilize a keyboard is a highly desirable skill in today's job market. These are skills for a lifetime!
