Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How many $1 bills will I need to pay for a book that costs $10? Questions like this one are what my students struggle with each day. Connecting real-life situations to concepts are essential in preparing students.
My class is made up of 98% Hispanic population with 95% of the students coming from non-English speaking families.
The school district is nestled in farming land in California where the population of parents who have graduated from high school is 45%. 95% of the students at the school receive free or reduced lunch.
Despite the challenges the students face, they are determined to learn.
My Project
The focus this year for my classroom is to develop future-focused individuals who are able to be visionary thinkers. We discuss how 5th grade isn't just a year to pass, but a stepping stone to their success in the future.
One of the major struggles the students face academically, is a math concept that was introduced to them in the 1st grade: place value. After 4 years of developing this concept, the students must not think of place value as just numbers, but as a tool to understand and solve situational problems such as dealing with money, mathematical organizational skills, and other problems that are fundamentally derived from understanding place value.
Researched demonstrates that the majority of students learn by manipulating objects, figures, and other hands-on activities. I am seeking a donation of base-10 blocks in order to solidify these much needed math concepts.
A donation of base-10 blocks and an activity curriculum book will allow these students to finally solidify the importance of this math concept, one they have been working with since the 1st grade.
Mastery of the math concept will allow the students to build upon other foundational and conceptual ideas to order to lead to the way to a successful educational career in math.
