Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In the increasingly interconnected world in which we live, students must be educated to become engaged citizens not just of our nation, but of our world. In my 7th grade Global Studies class, we work towards this goal every day. Help us out through funding subscriptions to current event magazines!
My students are the most hardworking and kindest 7th graders I have ever had the pleasure of working with (and for those of you who remember being in 7th grade, it's not an easy age to focus on academics or compassion for others!) They attend a Title I Georgia charter middle school with the mission of preparing children from immigrant, refugee and local families for college preparatory high schools and college.
My students work hard to overcome social, economic and linguistic barriers every day to succeed in a highly demanding but resource-poor academic environment and we would appreciate any help Donorschoose.org can provide.
My Project
My students need subscriptions of 10 each to Junior Scholastic and The New York Times Upfront magazines of various reading levels so they can analyze current events from around the world in 7th grade Global Studies. With these subscriptions, my students will be able to read, analyze and discuss non-fiction current events articles on a variety of topics and at a variety of reading levels. They will be able to make connections between the topics we study in class and events happening in our nation and around the world during their lives.
Donations to this project will have a substantial impact on my students, allowing them to engage with current event topics on a daily basis.
It will also be of great assistance to my wonderful school, which is succeeding academically despite the fact that we are struggling financially after several years of county and state-wide budget cuts.
