I teach English in a small public high school on the south side of Chicago. In my classroom, my students are eager to learn, and they have, after the last year and a half I have taught them, developed a strong love and curiosity of words. Because many students below the poverty level come to school with 25% of the vocabularies of middle and upper class students, it is imperative we spend time on English vocabulary acquisition so they are prepared for college and beyond.

The other day, my students were reading a text, and began arguing over the word "inevitable." They were debating as to whether the prefix "in" was false in its definition, and if the word did indeed mean "without a doubt." Before I knew it, the four dictionaries I have in my room were opened by my curious little word soldiers, and the rest of the students were craning their necks to look on while we came up with the correct definition. This melted my wordsmith heart, and I vowed I would try to add to the resources these children need to succeed.

With your help, I could have a classroom set of dictionaries for my budding authors and debaters. We all work towards achieving "Vast Vernaculars" so that we are prepared for college and the real world.

My students have a natural curiosity in words that is quite impressive in comparison to other students in this demographic in which I have taught. They LOVE words. Please aid them in their passion. Your generosity will be 'obsequious' to our quest. Thank you!
