My students need engaging surroundings to truly feel immersed in the wizarding world and help set the stage for our escape room! We need a suitcase, scene setter, keepsake boxes, bird cage, lantern, stationery, perfume bottle, posters owl, and quill pen.

My Students

I work in a very small community that sits on the southern state line of Texas and Louisiana. Two days before the first day of the school year Hurricane Harvey devastated our town. Of the 1,800 students we service, 1,100 were directly affected by the storm. Many lost everything. Not only possessions, but their very homes. Forcing them to live in a variety of situations; motels, shelters, RVs, pop-up trailers or moving in with relatives. It took two months for us to obtain enough space in our district to resume school. Our entire Junior High campus was relocated to the high school.

We created classrooms in any and every available space, including gyms, closets, foyers, and dressing rooms.

We've each had to create our "classrooms" from extremely limited furnishings. I am currently using a folding table for my teacher desk and a shower curtain as a whiteboard. My classroom is actually the high school drill team's practice studio; complete with an entire wall of mirrors! I've done what I can to make it a safe and welcoming place for my students, but I need your help to do more.

My Project

Escape rooms are all the rage in the area where we live. I created one earlier this year during our Edgar Allan Poe unit. The students LOVED it! They were able to review informational material from our unit in a variant way that was fun and engaging. What "sold" the experience most was the full immersion into the world of Poe that I tried to create with decor items such as: bones, mice, dark curtains, candles, trowels, mortar and bricks, etc.

I am trying to put together an escape room with Harry Potter's magical world as the theme.

I want to use this escape room as my end-of-year review before our state mandated testing. Not only do I want it to be collaborative and educational, but an experience they won't forget! The more enchanting the environment, the more successful the learning.

Now that I have the Breakout EDU Kits, the decor is the remaining piece to help the students feel they have actually stepped into the wizarding world. Snape's Potion's classroom full of potion bottles. The room will be transformed into the inside of a castle with the stone patterned backdrops. LED candles will hang from the ceiling. The suitcase will be in Harry's trolley right outside the door. The red stone backdrop will be slit so that the students can actually "crossover" into Hogwarts Castle. Using the ink cartridges, I"ll print every student their own ticket for Platform 9 and 3/4. They will spend the day working cooperatively as small teams to solve increasingly challenging puzzles that lead to their final freedom from Hogwarts!
