Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About half of my English language learners are students with special needs who are struggling readers and writers expected to pass the state exams and be college-ready. Some of them have interrupted formal education, and most come from impoverished areas. The school is providing them with different instructional services and the most recent one is the purchase of a reading program, Achieve 3000, that requires technology.
One thing is for sure, my students are tech-savvy and excited about this new program.
These students have been through a lot: adjusting to a new country, separation from their loved ones, and going through a culture shock. Besides learning English, non-Hispanic students are also learning a third language with the goal of becoming global citizens.
I am extremely proud of my students for overcoming the obstacles, trying so hard to achieve their dreams, and staying true to who they are as individuals with different cultural backgrounds.
My Project
Since my students are learning English, mistakes in writing are very common. They strive to do better so they work on fixing their mistakes or revising their responses. They lack confidence and believe a pencil and an eraser are their best friends. However, students are not allowed to use to write with a pencil on state exams. Therefore, I’m asking for erasable pens so my students can feel alright when making a mistake knowing it can be fixed. When it comes to the scoring of the essays on the state exams, neatness and legibility does matter and makes a big difference. Thanks!
