Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is full of future scientists. Most of my students have never seen or used a real microscope and my school does not provide one for the 2nd graders. We need a digital microscope and sets of prepared slides so my students will be able to see the wonders of the hidden microscopic world.
My students are wonderful second graders.
Our school is located in a high poverty immigrant community in California. The parents of most of my students have never finished high school and my students will hopefully be the first ones in their families to go to college.
My classroom consists primarily of students who are learning English as a second language. I also mainstream deaf and hard of hearing students and learning disabled students in my all inclusive classroom.
My Project
These materials will open up a new world for my students. They will be able to use the digital microscope to examine things on a microscopic scale. They will be able to use the prepared slides of animals, plants, and insects to see fine details invisible to the naked eye. The digital microscope will allow me to project the microscopic image onto my computer and smart board. That way all 35 of my students will be able to see the projected image from the microscope. My students will also be able to bring up other objects such as leaves that can also be viewed through the digital microscope too.
I help teach science to the other two second grade classes so all the 2nd graders at my school will benefit from these materials.
One of the best things about these resources is that the microscope and prepared slides will be able to be used every year so hundreds of my future students will also benefit from this project.
My students love science!
I try to make my science lessons exciting by bringing their science lessons to life so all students can be exposed to the science curriculum. I want my students to be able to see the microscopic world that most of them have only seen pictures of in their science book. I want this project to help inspire my student's imagination and positively influence many of these students to stay in school and pursue careers in science.
