I am a third-grade teacher at P.S. 181 in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. My students come mostly from low-income families, and most participate in the free-lunch program. If you are not a teacher, you may not know exactly how much of a terror a pencil sharpener can be. So many children come to school without sharpened pencils--having had no way to sharpen them at home--and are unable to do their classwork because of it. For each of thirty-plus children to sharpen two pencils can take up to a half hour of instructional time! Additionally, the grinding of the pencil sharpener is impossible to speak over in a classroom, and valuable learning time is wasted as children get up time after time to sharpen the pencils. Finally, the cries of "That's MY pencil!", "Hey, you stole that pencil from me!" and "He just broke my point!" are heard throughout the day, and the children and I are all about to explode from frustration. How to fix this problem? Simple--erasable pens. They are the best invention since the copy machine, and a lot less expensive. I am requesting a large supply of erasable pens to be shared among the entire classroom. This will accomplish several very important goals: 1) It will eliminate the need for a pencil sharpener and thus eliminate an enormous amount of classroom chaos and interruption. 2) It will teach the children to share and care for a class resource, since none of the pens will "belong" to any individual child. 3) The pens will continue to allow students to erase if they make a mistake, and will allow them to feel more "grown up" about their work, since pens are normally used only in the upper grades. Please help our classroom defeat the pencil sharpener! Thank you!
