Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 7th grade students are no strangers to overcoming adversity. All of them come from military families and are used to a transient lifestyle, changing schools every 2-3 years. To add to this, all of them have individual education programs and receive special education services. Some have specific learning disabilities, some are on the autism spectrum, others have emotional and behavioral disorders, a few have intellectual disabilities. All of them, however, are motivated learners that are capable of achieving a rigorous education.

The students in my classroom have the desire for a lifetime of success; they just need the tools to assist their journey.

All of my students appreciate the power of storytelling and enjoy the novels we read in class.

My Project

In 7th grade, students read three novels: The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, and Lord of the Flies by William Golding. I would also like to incorporate Hatchet by Gary Paulsen next school year. As of now, I have digital copies in pdf form of each of these texts. Unfortunately, my school library does not have the resources to purchase hard copies of these texts.

My goal is to raise enough funding to purchase a class set of hard copies so students can use them outside of class.

By having hard copies of these texts, students do not have to rely on technology to access the material and can read the books at home. Reading, re-reading, and previewing new material are all strategies my class uses to increase reading comprehension.

These four novels are not only important to me, but also are stories that will help my students become lifelong lovers of reading, as well as introduce them to characters that can help them overcome the challenges of adolescence.
