Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If you ask a third grader what her favorite subject is, you might expect her to say "art!" But at our school, my third graders do not have an art class or an official art teacher. Please consider helping these students get a chance to create, grow, and explore through art.
My third graders are hardworking, imaginative, and are motivated to learn and excel.
They are primarily first-generation English language learners from Asia, Central America, and South America who come from low-income families. Despite the challenges our students face, our school is one of just a handful in the city that has received an "A" rating five years running.
The intense focus on literacy and math is extremely important and our students' progress shows its value. Unfortunately, it has also made art education very limited in our school.
My Project
I have requested 2 packs of clay and 1 class pack of raku glazes so all of my students can have a chance to create and fire beautiful objects that will be inspired by the pottery and sculptures that we saw on our field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
Our school's strenuous curriculum leaves very little time for my third graders to do any kind of art project, something that is critical to support their creative and emotional development.
This ceramics project isn't just fun, (though that's important, too!) but it's also instrumental in developing an eight-year-old's fine motor skills, visual and spatial reasoning, and problem solving skills.
