My classroom serves two different programs. Most Early Childhood Special Education children attend school for three hours a day. Their peers in the State Pre-K program attend school all day. Most of the time the programs function as a “blended” classroom where all children are cooperatively learning together under the supervision of a regular education teacher, special education teacher, and four assistants. One difficult time of the day is the arrival of the second group of Early Childhood Special Education students. At this time, the other students are comfortably sprawled out on their cots in the classroom in the dark. While this is a great environment for sleeping it is not the most stimulating environment for learning.
My students have been working out in the hallway near our classroom. In order to make our “home away from home” more conducive to learning it would be great to have a new table that is the right size for children aged three to six. Our current table has been well loved and is wobbly, which makes it difficult for children with limited motor abilities to utilize properly.
Our classroom has several spaces dedicated to messy activities such as play-doh, painting, and “experimenting”. While I'm not afraid to get my hands dirty, I am often afraid of a disastrous art activity in the hallway. For this reason, I am requesting a set of “messy mats.” Preschoolers love to get their fingers dirty, and these mats would allow us an area in the hallway to make a mess without worrying about painting the school.
I am also requesting a small area rug. This way, we would be able to sit as a group and enjoy stories, small manipulative activities, and games.
Thank you for taking the time to read through my proposal. I can assure you that my afternoon special needs preschoolers will be thoroughly excited! They will be thankful when they eat, draw, and play without fear of the table wobbling. I know that the rug will be well used for a variety of activities. Most importantly, they will be elated that they have more time to do what preschoolers enjoy best explore! Even if the exploration leads to a bit of a mess!
