Horace Greeley Middle School, located in Astoria, NY, is proud to be starting a Drama program next year! This is the first time our middle school has included Drama in the curriculum, and I have the distinct honor of being able to teach several theatre classes throughout the year. We are also creating an after-school program that will culminate with a student performance of \"Guys and Dolls\" in the Spring semester. Our students are extremely talented and creative, yet they do not have an outlet to showcase their love of the arts. Sadly, numerous students have never seen a play, much less participated in the production of one. A drama program is vital for any middle school because participating in theatre builds self-esteem, creates a love and respect for the arts, promotes school spirit, gives students exposure to possible creative career paths and creates a safe haven for students to be a part of after-school. Because of these reasons, I am committed to providing the best arts education that I can for these well deserving students, yet I need several supplies to help make this dream a reality. We are indire need of a costume and a prop collection so that our students can help bring to life the characters about which they will both read and write. My request is not very specific because I know we can use costumes of all shapes, sizes, and colors! Because we are doing \"Guys and Dolls\" in the spring, any costume or prop piece that would indicate the 1950\'s would be much appreciated. However, we will, of course, be able to use any costume that is donated to our theatre program in some capactity. Not only will I be using costumes, props, and set pieces in my drama classes, but I plan on having a winter production as well as mounting several student written one-acts. In addition to these performances, I am going to teach technical theatre classes which will give the the students an opportunity to learn how to be a costume, set, or prop designer. We also need 4-5 black cubes of various sizes that can be rearranged into a simplistic set. Thank you very much for your time and consideration. Please do keep Horace Greeley Middle School in your thoughts should you wish to donate to this worthy cause!
