Emily, Grace, Olivia, Audrey, and others led the way with the creation of this project. They are 7th grade students who are eager to learn and creative. They are very enthusiastic about this project and have shown great initiative in taking on this task.
As our school follows the workshop model for learning, 7th grade students dive deep into the content that they are studying by conducting research in partnerships. Students create a work-plan daily and decide whether to read books or conduct internet research through suggested videos and texts found in a teacher-provided bibliography.
As students conduct research daily to gain knowledge to meet their research goals, they often need a comfortable work space and like to spread out across the room to work.
A small group of 7th grade students at our school came up with a plan to make our research spaces in the classroom more comfortable for everyone with the creation of a Book Nook. As students learn how to conduct research, analyze their findings, and make conclusions, they are learning how to interpret information and suggest solutions for real world issues that they will be challenged with addressing in college and career. Giving learners student-centered work spaces throughout the classroom so that they can have their own space to think about new information and discuss it with their research partner gets students excited to learn.
In Their Own Words
By analyzing the results of a survey taken by the members of our class, we recognized two things our classmates felt strongly about; an improved classroom library and just overall more comfort in the classroom. We decided to combine the two into a Book Nook. Our Nook will be fully equipped with a large bookshelf, so students can easily browse for books, stability circles and pillows, so students can be comfortable, and vanilla essential oils. Studies show that vanilla essential oils can actually promote student learning, so it is extremely important to have these in our classroom.
Allowing students to have a voice in our project was essential for making our ideas come together. The students’ needs had a particular focus on comfort and improvements on specific learning areas. We as a group of students, in collaboration with our teacher, designed a space all students would be able to excel in. The Book Nook was a student-centered idea and continues to be, and it has multiple benefits to student learning as noted. Created by a group of students and our teacher we have developed an idea that helps every learner in an educational environment.
Based on a poll taken by our class, this project will help students reach their academic goals by providing a comfortable space with practical storage for books. The new classroom we have “created”, will provide an environment that students will actually want to be in. The classroom will consist of a reading space so that kids have the opportunity to read in a comfy section. Another part of the classroom will consist of these blow up cushions to make being in the meeting area more fun.
