My 5th and 6th grade students are creative, thoughtful, and eager to learn! We are a school of choice that believes learning should be fun! Our school has a focus on arts integration, and our students love hands-on activities and projects that are related to the “real world”.
My group of students is very diverse, and each bring a special gift to our classroom community.
Students commute from different parts of the island, some spending over an hour every day to get to school. Yet they enter the classroom, ready to learn, and tackle new learning opportunities!
My Project
Would you choose to read a book during your free time on a topic that doesn't interest you? While some of my students already love reading, many of them are starting to find the joy in reading. To develop a lifelong love for reading, it is critical for students to read high levels of high-interest nonfiction books.
Let's give students access to high-interest nonfiction books to develop reading skills and to grow a love for reading to learn!
We need to expand our nonfiction books for my multi-age class of diverse 5th and 6th graders with various, engaging texts to help them grow a love for reading! My goal is for my students to be surrounded with high levels of just-right books that appeal to their interests. Through my mini-lessons, I teach my students reading strategies that they can apply to almost any nonfiction text for years to come. This helps them truly develop higher level thinking skills while they ENJOY the reading process!
Through this approach, I am confident my students will become engaged readers not only in class, but at home as well. Together, with your support, we’ll be able to update our limited nonfiction book set to meet the needs of the incoming multi-age 5th/6th grade level!
