Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year is the third year in which our students are experimenting with the computer science. They currently take an an elective class, which only meets twice a week for 45 minutes, but there aren't enough tangible materials to incorporate the fruits of their labor in the work. I want to rejuvenate my students' passion in technology & art.
My students come from families who are hoping to see their children be the first to graduate from college.
Over half of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch, and have experienced a lot of trauma growing up in this urban area. My students are persevering the challenges, code-switching between interactions at school versus home, and are eager to learn more. As the first STEM teacher to incorporate technology (Chromebooks) in the classroom, I've been given the responsibility to offer a computer science elective course to our students. We are currently using a web-based platform to learn coding, and my students are hungry for more. My students are starting to lose motivation as to applying their programming skills to their future careers. I hope I can change this with more technology tools to help boost their creativity.
My Project
Our Computer Science students want to take the next step in making their learning meaningful. Right now, they're learning how to code, but it's not put into practice yet. We've been privileged to work with a company to learn how to code, but it's limited to the work on the computer screen. Students need the resources to expand their learning to real world projects that they can design, build and experiment with.
My students deserve the resources to bring their coding to life with these Arduino kits.
With these programming kits, students' imagination will run wild; they will start programming projects as simple as lighting up LEDs to a timer, to programming robots to do specific tasks! With your help, my students will combine their creativity and their learning to design meaningful projects to benefit their community.
