Today's students live in a world of technology. As an educator, I work hard to continually engage my students. Students are using technology for many things in my classroom, including handing in homework and answering quiz questions. Using this technology gives every student a voice in the room.
My students come from many different backgrounds.
Many of them come to math class with much less enthusiasm than I would like. It is my job to get all students actively engaged in the class. That is where the technology comes into play.
I teach Algebra 2 and Geometry to sophomores, juniors and seniors. The students that I have plan to attend college or trade school after high school. As an educator, I want to do my best to prepare all of my students for their future.
We are the largest high school in our area. In our district, 59% of our students are eligible for free and reduced lunch. Many of these students have very limited access to technology outside of the school.
My Project
Our school has recently incorporated Google Apps for Education in the classroom. With these chromebooks, we will be able to utilize those accounts in the classroom to provide a hands-on experience for all students. We can take advantage of online graphing sites and also online quizzes. These types of activities can provide the students with immediate feedback so they know before leaving the classroom if they understand. This also allows the teacher to have a clear picture of every student's level of understanding.
By using technology, I have found that I am able to reach more students directly. This is due to the fact that there are many different ways for me to see instantaneously what each student is doing in my classroom at the same time without hovering over their shoulder to see their work. This makes my classroom a more inviting atmosphere and less intimidating.
As students prepare for the next chapter in their life, they need to be shown what lies ahead.
By exposing students to the technology, they are better prepared for a post secondary setting where it is expected that they will use technology. Through this project, more of my students will be given the opportunity to become accustomed to the technology that is available in the post secondary classroom.
