Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are basically the best, and they love to read! Our student body is diverse, ready to learn, eager to succeed, and determined to reach their goals!
They come from all over the world: Mexico and the Philippines, Bolivia and Colombia, and many were born and raised in East Palo Alto, California.
91% of our students participate in the Free and Reduced-Price Meal program. 90% of our students speak English as a second language. 98% of our students will be first-generation college students.
Our students will rise to any bar we set for them, so we like to set it high!
My Project
Ordinary People Change the World is an amazing series of nonfiction books about people who changed the world, and my kids LOVE them! We received a set of these books from amazing donors at the beginning of the year, and my kids are dying to read more!
Unfortunately, it is really hard to find a great nonfiction series, even though reading nonfiction is so important for kids.
This series is amazing and uses fun illustrations and speech bubbles to help keep kids engaged while also giving them high-quality content and teaching them that we can all do our part to help change the world. These books also give kids real-world examples of all the SEL tools we try to teach them. They can see how real people work through struggles to accomplish great things, just like they will some day!
The books we're requesting are about Lucille Ball, Jackie Robinson, Jim Henson, Gandhi, Helen Keller, Marie Curie, and Neil Armstrong.
