Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

These kindergartners love to be at school. They love to learn, and they enjoy being an important part of their community. Nearly all the students that attend our school live in low-income households, but that doesn't stop them from contributing generously to their learning environment. They proudly cheer each other on, lift each other up, and push each other forward.

The students in this classroom come from a wide variety of different cultures and have vastly diverse identities.

They are curious about themselves, their classmates, and the cultural diversity within their community.

Every student in this classroom is special and unique, they are kind and considerate, and they are well mannered and respectful. When these positive personal traits are extended to those that look and behave differently that they do, they are helping to make the entire world a better place.

My Project

When students from diverse backgrounds come together to form a learning environment, the learning tools need to represent their rich diversity. If students are not represented in the literature they interact with, there is a chance they will begin to feel invisible or unworthy of representation.

Every child in the classroom is important, valued, and special, and they deserve to see a representation of their unique diversity in the books they read and the stories they hear.

Building a library with a collection of books that include characters of different cultures, races, genders, and other identities allows us to engage in respectful questioning and classroom discussions and activities that teach students to better understand themselves, each other, and the people in our increasingly diverse society. The books on this list will help me guide these important discussions to give all students in the classroom a sense of representation and belonging, and importance.
