Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students at Fort Miller Middle School range in ethnicity and economic status but the majority tend toward some of the lowest and most disadvantaged students in the city. These middle schoolers, however, like all children, show incredible personal resolve and enthusiasm toward learning when provided meaningful and relevant resources.
Unfortunately, though, our students lack experience in the world of academics and especially experience with quality reading.
This deficiency prevents them from obtaining much-needed core foundational knowledge that generates strong vocabulary, real-life connections, and direct, concept-driven, literacy learning.
This struggle can and often does spill into some questionable choices for these children. These students need mentors and resources that can provide reliable, relevant examples of what good choices look like and what it feels like to put them into practice.
My Project
The Scholastic magazine subscriptions for, Choices, and the set of Walter Dean Myers young adult novel, Street Love, can serve as the backdrop for the injustice awareness and self-reflection education that our middle school students pursue. The Women's Alliance elective course these girls are taking will use these resources in an elective class and the library as curriculum pieces.
Both of these unique and valuable sources offer different perspectives and will be useful tools to help shape the lives of these middle school age children who do not grow up in the perfect worlds we would have them develop inside of while providing needed literacy driven thinking skills.
These texts will also be used to help open and broaden awarenesses toward better avenues for healthy choices and valuable self-reflection.
