My students need books sets, including "Harry Potter", and "The Hunger Games" to be involved in lunchtime book clubs and to get them excited about reading!
Can you imagine growing up in a house that doesn't have books in it? Not having a role model at home who loves to read and encourages reading? Many of the students at my school live in homes like these. It is up to us to make a difference.
My students are in an urban Title I school.
Many students do not have access to books outside of school and do not think that reading is something fun, just something required at school. These students are capable of greatness and of loving reading, but they need someone to show them how amazing it can be. I want to start lunchtime book clubs with fourth and fifth graders this year to get them excited about reading. I believe that every child will love reading, if they find the right book. By having fun lunchtime book clubs with many of the popular books today, I believe that I can foster a lifelong love of reading in these at-risk students.
My Project
If I am able to get these resources for my students it will change reading into one of the coolest things they can do. The students love getting to come to my room and this will be another excuse for them to come. With multiple copies of The Hunger Games, The Lightning Thief, Harry Potter, and A Series of Unfortunate Events; I will be able to form different book clubs for the students of my school to be involved in. They will read a chapter at home and during school throughout the week and celebrate with their book club at a fun lunch bunch to discuss what they read, what might happen next, and participate in fun games dealing with their book. Many of the books that I am requesting are books from a series. If the students love what they are reading, they will be hungry for more! These books could change students lives for the better!
If students choose to read, they increase their vocabulary (which is very important for our high ESL population) and broaden their world.
Books can inspire children to make more of themselves and excel. These books could give children a love of reading that will enhance their lives.
